Hello there!!! Ahhh how I love October, the weather is changing, I can ride around with my windows down and more importantly IT’S MY BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!!!!!:) That was not biased at all!
But today is not about me, so let me get back on track real quick. It is the time where we meet an up and coming artist that his doing is thing, and whose work is worth getting familiar with.
So today I introduce to you, Houston-based artists John Whaley:
1. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m from Lake Charles, Louisiana.
2. WHEN DID YOU START CREATING?
I’ve been creating most of my life, I have always had a creative spirit. In high school my artist curiosity was really at an all-time high. I used to build customized bicycles with my dad. That is what made me want to design cars as well, and further my journey as an artist. After high school, I went into the military and put all those dreams aside. Now I’m back on track and staying focused on my dream.
3. SELF THOUGHT OR ART SCHOOL?
God given talent Self Taught artist
4. HOW WOULD YOU CLASSIFY YOUR WORK?
I really don’t like putting a “class” or title on my style of work. I feel it is very open and expressive. this means I like to combine different elements of other styles I’m inspired by, to create my own. I can go from really colorful to stripped down black and white. But if I had to put it in a class, it would be abstract expressionism.
5. HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED OVER TIME?
Oh yes most definitely! My style has grown. At first, I was only using paint to create, now I use recycled materials and other things to give a great creative touch to any idea or concept I have in mind.
6. DRAWING OR PAINTING?WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
Painting is definitely my fav, I’m not as strong of a drawer as I am a painter. With my work, I want to take it a step further and be more of a “creative” than a painter. This happens by using mixed media, like recycled materials etc..
7. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO BECOME A MEMORABLE ARTIST IN YOUR OPINION?
Legacy. You build a legacy by doing great things for not only yourself but for the community and those who are in need. The key is being a part of something that is bigger than yourself. Not fame or how much money you bring in, but the difference you made in the world with your talent.
8. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK TAKING YOU?
I do a lot of work for charities and special causes. Eventually I see my work taking me further than any dream I have thought of lol.. but for now, I see my work taking me across the globe. Different countries and villages, allowing me to bless them with my gift!
9. PROUDEST ART ACHIEVEMENT?
Proudest art achievement has to the collaborative piece I did with my nieces and daughter. It was a portrait of them together and they worked with me on it!
10 ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS TRYING TO LEAVE THEIR MARK?
Pray Always, be the hardest worker in the room and lastly… always follow your dreams -peace.
Ciao for now!
